What's the Difference?

Reliability
Definition:
Reliability is the consistency of your measurement, or the degree to which an instrument measures the same way each time it is used under the same condition with the same subjects. In short, it is the repeatability of your measurement. A measure is considered reliable if a person's score on the same test given twice is similar. It is important to remember that reliability is not measured, it is estimated. There are two ways that reliability is usually estimated: test/retest and internal consistency.

Test/Retest
Test/retest is the more conservative method to estimate reliability. Simply put, the idea behind test/retest is that you should get the same score on test 1 as you do on test 2. The three main components to this method are as follows:

implement your measurement instrument at two separate times for each subject; compute the correlation between the two separate measurements; and assume there is no change in the underlying condition (or trait you are trying to measure) between test 1 and test 2.

Internal Consistency
Internal consistency estimates reliability by grouping questions in a questionnaire that measure the same concept. For example, you could write two sets of three questions that measure the same concept (say class participation) and after collecting the responses, run a correlation between those two groups of three questions to determine if your instrument is reliably measuring that concept.
One common way of computing correlation values among the questions on your instruments is by using Cronbach's Alpha. In short, Cronbach's alpha splits all the questions on your instrument every possible way and computes correlation values for them all (we use a computer program for this part). In the end, your computer output generates one number for Cronbach's alpha - and just like a correlation coefficient, the closer it is to one, the higher the reliability estimate of your instrument. Cronbach's alpha is a less conservative estimate of reliability than test/retest.
The primary difference between test/retest and internal consistency estimates of reliability is that test/retest involves two administrations of the measurement instrument, whereas the internal consistency method involves only one administration of that instrument.

Validity

Definition:
Validity is the strength of our conclusions, inferences or propositions. More formally, Cook and Campbell (1979) define it as the "best available approximation to the truth or falsity of a given inference, proposition or conclusion." In short, were we right? Let's look at a simple example. Say we are studying the effect of strict attendance policies on class participation. In our case, we saw that class participation did increase after the policy was established. Each type of validity would highlight a different aspect of the relationship between our treatment (strict attendance policy) and our observed outcome (increased class participation).

Types of Validity:
There are four types of validity commonly examined in social research.

Conclusion validity asks is there a relationship between the program and the observed outcome? Or, in our example, is there a connection between the attendance policy and the increased participation we saw?

Internal Validity asks if there is a relationship between the program and the outcome we saw, is it a causal relationship? For example, did the attendance policy cause class participation to increase?

Construct validity is the hardest to understand in my opinion. It asks if there is there a relationship between how I operationalized my concepts in this study to the actual causal relationship I'm trying to study/? Or in our example, did our treatment (attendance policy) reflect the construct of attendance, and did our measured outcome - increased class participation -reflect the construct of participation? Overall, we are trying to generalize our conceptualized treatment and outcomes to broader constructs of the same concepts.

External validity refers to our ability to generalize the results of our study to other settings. In our example, could we generalize our results to other classrooms?
The real difference between reliability and validity is mostly a matter of definition. Reliability estimates the consistency of your measurement, or more simply the degree to which an instrument measures the same way each time it is used in under the same conditions with the same subjects. Validity, on the other hand, involves the degree to which your are measuring what you are supposed to, more simply, the accuracy of your measurement. It is my belief that validity is more important than reliability because if an instrument does not accurately measure what it is supposed to, there is no reason to use it even if it measures consistently (reliably).

In a group of four, we needed to come up with our Claymation Project. Claymation is the art of making clay figures move, talk, sing, dance or whatever your imagination wants it to do! Using stop motion photography or like we did, a series of still pictures taken with a digital camera, the frames are then run together to produce an animation.

Some kids do not enjoy math because they just can not see the point of it. Unlike reading or painting, all those mathematical symbols and numbers don't seem to mean anything.
What you need to do is show them how important math is in the real world. Tell them stories about the great engineering feats throughout history, such as the great pyramids of Egypt, the Hoover dam, or the latest space missions to Mars, nothing would have been achieved without mathematics and mathematicians.
Involve your kids in some real world math away from the classroom. Find something your child is interested in and relate it to math in some way. For example, when you're in a store, ask your kids to add up the prices and keep a running total while you shop. Then ask them how much change you should expect at the checkout.
Kids may become mentally "stuck" on a topic because they're only looking at it in one way. Perhaps they need to step outside the box and see it from a different angle. Show them the beauty of alternative viewpoints. Help them to see situations from other people's perspective. Get them into the habit of exploring different ways of solving a problem. Even something simple like tidying up a room can have several possible "solutions" or ways of approaching it.
Crosswords and lateral thinking puzzles are good for this kind of flexible thinking. Eliminate negative statements like "math is hard" (even if you thought of yourself as a math dunce at school!). Explain how everyone has a natural ability to do math and that solving math problems isn't so different from solving other kinds of problems in life.

Special Message
We can see that we truly have the potential to achieve our dreams and destiny. We know sometimes it’s hard to believe we actually can realize our aspirations when we may have tried for many years and nothing has worked out for us. Most people quit after they’ve struck out or got knocked down a few times. They simply don’t have the persistence to hang on when the going gets tough. So they incorrectly think that if they can’t achieve their goals after several attempts, then they’re a failure and never will be able to attain them for the rest of their lives. The truth is, if they just hold on to their dreams and persist a little bit longer when the situation gets tough, then they'll reach their dreams sooner or later. If we’ve been working on a worthy goal for a while and haven’t produced the results we wanted, keep on trying. We may just be a foot or two from the diamond field. So keep on digging no matter what obstacles you might encounter.

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be!

There is inside you
all of the potential
to be whatever you want to be,
all of the energy
to do whatever you want to do.

Imagine yourself as you would like to be,
doing what you want to do,
and each day,
take one step
towards your dream.

And though at times
it may seem toodifficult to continue,
hold on to your dream.
One morning you will awake
to find that you are the person you dreamed of,
doing what you wanted to do,
simply because you had the courage
to believe in your potential
and to hold on to your dream.
~ Donna Levine ~

Within You Is The Strength To Meet Life's Challenges!

You are stronger than you think,
remember to stand tall.
Every challenge in your life
helps you to grow.

Every problem you encounter
strengthens your mind and your soul.
Every trouble you overcome
increases your understanding of life.
When all your troubles weigh
heavily on your shoulders,
remember that beneath the burden
you can stand tall,
because you are never given
more than you can handle...
and you are stronger than you think.

Words To Live By

It's not how much you accomplish in life
that really counts,
but how much you give to other.

It's not how high you build your dreams
that makes a difference,
but how high your faith can climb.
It's not how many goals you reach,
but how many lives you touch.

It's not who you know that matters,
but who you are inside.
Believe in the impossible,
hold tight to the incredible,
and live each day to its fullest potential.
You can make a difference
in your world.

~ Rebecca Barlow Jordan ~

A Creed To Live By

Don't undermine your worth
by comparing yourself with others.
It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don't set your goals
by what other people deem important.

Only you know what is best for you.
Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to them as you would your life,
for without them
life is meaningless.

Don't let your life slip through your fingers
by living in the past or for the future.
By living your life one day at a time,
you live all the days of your life.

Don't give up when you still have something to give.
Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect.
It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.
Don't be afraid to encounter risks.

It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love.
The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly;
and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don't dismiss your dreams.

To be without dreams is to be without hope;
to be without hope is to be without purpose.
Don't run through life so fast that you forget
not only where you've been, but also where you're going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored
each step of the way.

~ Nancye Sims ~

Don't give Up! Your Dreams May Be Closer Than You Think!

There may be times when you feel
as if you have taken a million steps towards your dreams,
and acted on your plans,
only to find yourself in the same place that you began from.
At times like this, you must not give up.

You must continue on.
Though you may feel lost, bewildered, and alone,
continue to believe in yourself.
Do not allow discouragement and doubt
to blur your vision and wash away your dreams.
Visualize your way beyond the detours, standstills, and obstacles.

You will realize your dreams.
You have worked hard
and taken so many productive steps
in a positive direction that you are bound to succeed.
Whatever the hurt of the moment may be, it will pass.
Tomorrow is always a new dawn.
Today, you must pause, rest, catch your breath, and then look ahead.
Each step will bring you closer to your dreams.
The rainbows and the love that you deserve are insight.
Happiness is just around the next turn.

Look for the good in others,
everybody has their own song to sing.
Live each moment to the fullest,
for a moment too soon becomes a memory.
Look for opportunities, not guarantees.
Hope for the best.
Give people a chance to love you,
for that is how you learn to love.
Live your life for yourself,
but always be considerate of others.
Believe in tomorrow, for it holds the key
to your dreams.

Be True to Your Heart And Your Dreams Will Come True

Stay true to all your beliefs and goals.
Stand tall.
Through all life's setbacks and disappointments,
your dreams will come true.

When no one else is with you,
and no one seems to care,
just whisper to yourself,
"I am the controller of my destiny.
It's up to me what comes to pass,
and if I keep my thoughts positive and strong,
my dreams will come true."
When what seem to be impossible obstacles
stand in your way,
just think of all the times
you got through yesterday.
There is a place for you in this world.
Stay on your chosen path.
All the power is within you;
be true to what is in your heart.
Be honest within yourself;
if you are, then you cannot fail.
Your dreams will come true.

~ Debra Ruegg-Jenkins ~

Never Let Go Of Hope

One day you will see that it all has finally come together.
What you have always wished for has finally come to be.
You will look back and laugh at what has passed
and you will ask yourself,

"How did I get through all of that?"
Just never let go of hope.
Just never quit dreaming.
And never let love depart from your life.

~ Jancarl Campi ~

Anything Is Possible

Believe in Yourself,
and Remember that Anything Is Possible
Believe in what makes you feel good.
Believe in what makes you happy.
Believe in the dreams you've always wanted to come true,
and give them every chance to.

Life holds no promises
as to what will come your way.
You must search for your own ideals
and work towards reaching them.

Life makes no guarantees as to what you'll have.
It just gives you time to make choices
and to take chances
and to discover whatever secrets might come your way.

If you are willing to take the opportunities you are given
and utilize the abilities you have,
you will constantly fill your life
with special moments and unforgettable times.

No one knows the mysteries of life or its ultimate meaning,
but for those who are willing
to believe in their dreams and in themselves,
life is a precious gift in which anything is possible.

~ Dena DiIaconi ~

Today's Dreams Are Tomorrow's Successes

Don't be afraid of high hopes
or plans that seem to be out of reach.
Life is meant to be experienced,
and every situation allows for
learning and growth.

Motivation is a positive starting point,
and action places you on a forward path.
A dream is a blueprintof a goal not yet achieved;
the only difference between the two
is the effort involved in attaining
what you hope to accomplish.

Let your mind and heart urge you on;
allow the power of your will
to lead you to your destination.

Don't count the steps ahead;
just add up the total
of steps already covered,
and multiply it by
faith, confidence, and endurance.

Always remember that
for those who persist,
today's dreams are transformed
into tomorrow's successes.

CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL DISCOVERIES IN THE INNER CITY OF GEORGE TOWN AND ROUND ISLAND TRIP - PENANG
Penang is an island off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia and one of Malaysia's main tourist draws. Its beaches are a little lackluster when compared with those in some other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated for by the island's rich multicultural history, which is full of colonial and Chinese influences. Penang is also well known for being the "food paradise" of Malaysia, if not the whole of Asia. Georgetown is the capital of Penang and the only city on the island of any size or historical significance. It a favorite spot for tourists and locals as it has lots of interesting pre-war homes. Batu Ferringhi, located on the north coast, is home to white sandy beaches and the luxurious hotels and restaurants that cater to tourists.

These students are from a secondary school. They have been selected by their school to help us to test our online instrument during the school tryout. In this session, we gave the students an online test and they needed to complete the given test within 30 minutes. The online test was prepared by our group using the WUFOO program. All students must answer all questions and submitted their final answers by clicking the submit button. Finally we collected and analyzed the data by using Test Analysing Program. Our project title is Assessing Mathematics Multiple-Choice Test using Test Analysis Program, TAP Software. Thank you so much boys. We appreciate your cooperation. We love you.
